2001 HAARLEMS DAGBLAD - TRYING EVERTHING OUT IN MUSIC
The youngest participant of the Grand Prix Dance Final is 19 Years old and still lives with his parents in Haarlem, his name is Terence Koot. Under the name of ‘mockmoon’, he and guitarist friend Niels Tusenius present a mix of cinematical techno and breakbeats. Six months ago, he decided to quit his Study of Art in Utrecht and devote himself to his music. While studying, Terence was also busy with fashion, animations and comic-book art, but thought it would be better to concentrate on only one thing – music. “I find experimenting and trying things out to be a study in it’s own right. I listen a lot to all different styles for inspiration, but I would like to develop my own style. I hope to spend the rest of my life experimenting” Tomorrow will be Terence’s second performance in the Netherlands. His first was at the Kade in Zaandam, he qualified to perform simply by sending in a registration form and a demo-tape. In Zaandam he left five other competitors eating dust. Terence has also performed at `Break 21’, an international festival for young artists in Slovenia. He is performing in the Paradiso as an experience as he never played there before – he also wants to have some fun and show us everything he has at the moment. Although mockmoon are in the dance final, the crowd are not likely to go wild, at least not physically, at the music. “Electronic music doesn’t necessarily have to be something to dance to, it has to carry more of a feeling – if it’s gloomy or whipped up. Above all, it depends on how open people are to it”, according to Terence. So koot has no ambitious expectations of the final, but his view of the future betrays him as it is bursting with ideas and ambitions. “I specifically want to examine the relationship between sound and visual effects. I know a lot of people who are interested in creative work, I think it is important to remain open to other people’s ideas and activities and to talk about each other’s work. I really want to work with music professionally, after the final I will be working hard on my Debut album”
