2001 GPNL - CONTEMPORARY BREAKBEAT ON A AN EXPERIMENTAL VERGE Terence Koot, the musical mastermind behind the breakbeats of mockmoon, is a creative person. Since childhood Terence has been interested in music, but not just music; he also enjoys poetry, audio-visual art, graphic design and once in a while he makes his own clothes. Drawing was his first passion and for a time he studied in the Art Academy in Utrecht but quit to pursue his love of creating music. His design knowledge comes in useful for his performances however, as he takes care of his own visual effects. Terence says "I think it is important to examine the relationship between sound and visual effects and find connections. For me, the visual effects only have a beneficial function if they complement the music in a performance”, he continues “my music and visual effects make a performance more three dimensional”. He informs me that at his next set, we will see an experimental ‘VJ film’ called ‘Sounds of the Surf’. At the moment breakbeat music on the dance scene is the music genre that appeals to him most, it is a genre that is still in development. He also works on different techno projects but he says on “I’ve noticed a certain sterility in this music, which is why I can’t make myself more familiar with it”. |
